Best Assisted Living Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta, vibrant and varied, is Georgia’s largest city with a population of over five million people. It’s not surprising that a city of this size, with its complex history and the presence of two major universities (Georgia State and Emory), has a broad range of resources for its inhabitants.

Why Retirees Love Atlanta

Atlanta – and the surrounding area including Decatur and Sandy Springs, for example – has become increasingly popular as a retirement destination. The following are some of the reasons a retiree might choose this town as their new home:

  • For those who prefer identifiable seasons, Atlanta has them, along with a relatively mild climate. Though some winter days may fall below freezing, the January average temperature is 43.5 degrees. Still, some would find the hot and humid summers uncomfortable. On average, the highest temperature for the hottest month, July, is 87 degrees.
  • The cost of living is relatively low, with Numbeo.com ranking Atlanta 142th out of 533 cities in the world for 2018.
  • Atlanta has a tremendous arts scene, whether you’re into ballet or other dance forms, music of all kinds, or theater (including touring Broadway hits).
  • Prime among the many arts festivals is the annual Atlanta Film Festival, much respected by film aficionados and those in the filmmaking industry. This event, which has been running for more than 30 years, is one of the longest-running such events in the US.
  • Among the city’s most popular historical sites is the Atlanta History Center and its 33 acres of exhibits situated in wildlife trails and gardens. These exhibits include one of the largest history museums in the Southeast, memorabilia from the 1996 Olympics (held in Atlanta), buildings used in movies (including The Hunger Games), and the carefully preserved apartment in which Margaret Mitchell wrote Gone with the Wind. If you want to get a sense of Atlanta history, this is an excellent place to begin.
  • Hiking, biking, running, and boating are all easily available. If you prefer, visit one of the numerous parks including Atlanta Botanical Garden, (where you can stop and smell the orchids), Martin Luther King, Jr. National
  • Historical Park (which includes Dr. King’s resting place), Zoo Atlanta (and enjoy the pandas), or Skyview Atlanta (ride a Skyview Atlanta Gondola 20 stories in the air, for a bird’s eye view of the city), or… well, let’s agree there are a lot of options.
  • Sports teams: football, baseball, soccer, and even two basketball teams!
  • Atlanta is home to several colleges and universities including Emory and Georgia State, which can only make the town yet more vibrant.
  • Georgia’s tax structure benefits those retirees who meet the age requirement. There’s no tax on Social Security retirement benefits, and a $65,000 deduction per person on all types of retirement income for anyone over the age of 64. Additionally, Georgia has no state inheritance or estate tax.
  • Atlanta has a range of hospitals including the highly ranked Emory University Hospital and Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital.
  • Anyone traveling to or from Atlanta can rely on the city’s airport, one of the busiest in the world.
  • For getting around the Atlanta area, there’s the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA). Established in 1971, the system has expanded from its original bus system to include a rapid transit system (rail), making this highly praised network the eighth-largest rapid transit system in the US (when rated by ridership).

Atlanta’s Downsides

Even as fine a city as Atlanta has its negatives. Among things people might not like are its rapid growth, that summer heat and humidity mentioned above, traffic congestion, and a crime rate that is nearly twice the national average.
