Baltimore, Maryland is only 40 miles northeast of Washington, DC. There are many elements making this city of some 620,000 residents an intriguing place to call home.
In addition to an abundance of restaurants, shopping opportunities, entertainment venues and educational outlets, many are drawn to the long and intricate history of the town.
Established in 1729, Baltimore – fondly known as Charm City, B’more, and The City of Neighborhoods because of its nine districts made up of 260 neighborhoods – is a site-seers dream.
One of the most interesting ‘hoods may be the famed Inner Harbor, one of the country’s oldest seaports but also the home to many forward-looking and innovative advances in city planning. Its collection of museums represents both the past and the future.
There is a lot see and do in Baltimore, or one of the suburban towns like Columbia or Pikesville. Let’s look, first, at some of the qualities that have drawn people to this East Coast town as well as a couple of things others have found off-putting.
What people like about Baltimore, Maryland
- Good news for seniors: Maryland does not tax Social Security. In regards to an estate/inheritance tax, close relatives and charities are completely exempt. Retirees may qualify for a pension exclusion of up to $29,000. There’s a 6% sales tax, with additional excise taxes applied to alcoholic purchases.
- Retirees may well appreciate the Baltimore City Health Department white paper for 2018 which includes a section on how to make the city more senior-supportive. The four-pronged effort (see pp. 19-20) includes:
- The launching of its Citywide Falls Reduction Strategy; allocation of funds to advance care coordination for older adults; a reinforcing of the use of senior centers scattered throughout the city; and further funding to support a city-wide program to ensure seniors have access to the information and resources they need.
- World-class medical facilities include Johns Hopkins Hospital. Whatever your health concerns, there should be an excellent healthcare provider close to hand.
- Besides enjoying four distinct seasons each year, Baltimore offers approximately 213 days of sun annually. The average temperature in July, the hottest month, is 89 degrees F. January, generally, the coolest month, has an average low of 28 degrees, though the wind chill factor can make it considerably colder.
- Transportation is a breeze, thanks to an efficient bus system. There’s also a water taxi service at the Inner Harbor. For those going in or out of the area, there’s an Amtrak station and an international airport.
- Sports fans, rejoice: Baltimore supports both a pro baseball team, the Baltimore Orioles, and two national football teams, the Baltimore Ravens and the Washington Redskins. Two more options are an indoor soccer team and a lacrosse team, both major league. Besides all that, the town is home to the second of the Triple Crown races, the Preakness.
- If you’re interested in the classroom experience, there are at least 16 local colleges in the Baltimore area, including the highly prestigious Johns Hopkins University.
- Lovers of coffee and/or tea will never have reason to complain: Baltimoreans (that’s what they call themselves) love the best of both. There are dozens of cafes to choose from, each with its own ambiance and snack (or full meal) offerings.
- If you enjoy history, Baltimore has some 40 museums, catering to a multitude of interests. Of course, there are museums brimming with art but you might go see where the “Star Spangled Banner” was sown, or explore the art and other contributions made by African-American, Jewish, or Polish-Slavic citizens towards shaping Maryland in general and Baltimore specifically. Edgar Allan Poe’s former home, the history of the trolley and electric bus streetcars in Baltimore, and the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum are just three more possibilities.
- For those who favor renegade artists, drop in on the most unusual American Visionary Art Museum of “outsider” art. And who’d want to overlook Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum?
- Not all the art is in museums. Baltimore has more buildings on the national registry than any other US city. The pride the city takes in preserving buildings dating from the early 1700s onward is rare and results in a special treat for anyone interested in architecture.
- Summertime brings many free entertainment opportunities, both inside and out, including the country’s largest free arts festival: Artscape.
Other considerations for Baltimore
- Property taxes are also significantly higher than the US average.
- Despite its undeniable charm, Baltimore has been rated as the most dangerous, crime-ridden US city. According to the Baltimoresun.com, there were 342 reported homicides in 2017, a 17% increase over the previous year. While the crime rate reportedly declined in 2018, the significance of those lower numbers is not clear. Bottom line, keep in mind that, just as in any city or town, some neighborhoods are safer than others, so do your research.

What they didn’t like: countless problems coordinating care for my mother, One department…cannot coordinate with the other department, received duplicate medical services from different practitioners, too expensive, the building could use a little maintenance — just a new coat of paint, expensive, [parking] rather limited for guests

What they liked: very pretty place, clean, very well-maintained, right in the heart of Columbia, homey feel, they bring in pets like therapy animals, up to date and very comfortable, in a metropolitan area [yet] you would not feel that you were close to the city, close to the hospital, small walking path, the layout of the facility, [family/friends] can visit whenever you'd like, Lovely outside deck with a garden, Liked the configuration of the memory care unit…almost a pod arrangement with smaller nooks and places to gather, Sunrise comes across like a place for life instead of like an institution, everything is a la carte, Everyone was smiling, best thing about Sunrise is its people…so kind and supportive, employees knew the residents by name, very satisfied with the communication with the staff and their experience with the care of the elderly, very professional, they stress with the residents that if they needed anything for them to press their attendant call button, physical therapy and occupational therapy, did not feel like a nursing home…more like living in a bed and breakfast, saw the staff interacting with the residents, seemed to have a good ratio of staff to residents, Everybody was very welcoming, assigned care provider, medical attendant, graduated care, a full time trained staff [&] around the clock, everyone associated with the Sunrise facility really seems to enjoy what they are doing and they enjoy helping the residents, [Sales staff] very courteous and very kind, sales manager was outstanding, tour [guide] really nice and obviously very knowledgeable, workers seem to treat residents like family, staff is very friendly [&] helpful and professional, dining hall area was really nice, chef, dining room is very spacious, three meals a day and [can] snack on other items, food is good, food was fantastic, good healthy food choices, living quarters were very nice, rooms were really large, laundry once a week, they take them on trips outside to various restaurants and points of interest, exercise classes, a walking club, some live music, country ride, they bring in entertainers, exercise programs, games
What they didn’t like: so expensive, too expensive, hallways there were very long [so] If those caregivers are engaged somewhere else…not possible for them to respond in [what sales manager claimed was] 5 to 12 minutes, needs updating, Too small & cramped, Decor is…in need of updating, They don’t provide the level of care or assistance they claim to, many…activities…don't happen or are canceled last minute, do not do residents laundry or clean rooms as scheduled, unreliable when it comes to loved one’s medications, activities geared toward men, no diversity amongst residents, Seems too big

What they didn’t like: too expensive, dining area doubled as an activity area, a lot of hidden fees, food wasn’t that good, [resident’s] clothes were lost, medications were given incorrectly, staff (mostly GNAs or lower) didn't know how to contact [loved one’s] doctor or any doctor, food is not the greatest, downside is that the services are sold a la carte so it’s hard to know how much you’ll be paying each month, rooms were extremely small, needs to be updated and remodeled
