Ohio’s capital, and largest city, Columbus, OH, is a college town with all the activity and opportunities that entails. International cuisine, varied forms of entertainment and educational opportunities are everywhere, making it a popular choice for retirees seeking a stimulating home.
Anyone looking for a physical or mental workout and an overall healthy way of life, this could be the ideal choice.
With nearly 875,000 residents, this city is a charming and exciting blend of the old and the new. Columbus has several nicknames- Cowtown, Cbus, and Arch City. It is described as being affordable, offering many amenities, and a place many have been happy to call home.
What people like about Columbus, Ohio
- In 2013 and 2015, the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF) named Columbus the most intelligent city in the world. According to Columbus.gov: “The designation is awarded to the community that best creates inclusive economic opportunity and improves competitiveness through the use of broadband and information technology to innovate, collaborate, attract investment, improve the delivery of government services and raise the quality of life for its citizens.” This town has also been tagged, at various times, as the most intellectual, most literate, and among the most educated.
- According to bestplaces.net, the cost of living here is just under 10% lower than the national average.
- Ohio is relatively senior-friendly when it comes to taxes. The great news is there’s no estate tax (the Ohio Estate Tax was repealed in 1/1/2013) and Social Security retirement benefits are fully exempt. Apart from that, pensions or retirement accounts (e.g., a 401(k) or an IRA) will be taxed as regular income, but a senior may be entitled to a credit, so look into it. Definitely less good, property and sales tax rates are slightly higher than the national average.
- Though Columbus is hardly a golfing mecca, there are several courses in and near Columbus that reviewers have found very playable.
- Columbus has a bike share program (CoGo) with more than two dozen stations scattered over downtown and throughout various neighborhoods. The city is busily adding more bike lanes and paths to accommodate its riders. In December 2018, Gov. Kasich signed a bill regulating the use of the e -bicycle, making Ohio the 11th state to do so. FTR, the electric bicycle allows the rider to choose between pedaling or relying on the bike’s rechargeable engine, or a mix of the two (depending on the model). The fastest models can travel 28 miles per hour.
- Walkscore.com, which rates many US cities as to walkability, has declared Columbus the 32nd most walkable US city. Among the many areas to amble is the Scioto Mile, a long stretch in downtown Columbus along the Scioto River, filled with beautiful scenery, walking trails, bike paths, and parks. The Park of Roses is just one of many parks available.
- The city contains more than 30 museums. These museums are devoted to lauding a spectacular range of topics including various branches of science, Native American history, African-American culture, Roman Catholic art and artifacts, the most famous Ohio women, James Thurber, and a great deal more.
- Thanks, in part, to the town’s German heritage (which at one point made up about a third of the city’s population), Columbus is known for its impressive breweries.
- Columbus has many interesting neighborhoods, but – architecturally and historically – German Village is the most visited. Founded just over 200 years ago, more than 1,600 buildings have been carefully restored, resulting in this being regarded as one of the finest restoration projects throughout the world. An active neighborhood, open to new residents, it is a must-see.
- Arts-related events happen throughout the year, of course, but the highlight of summer is the Ohio State Fair, one of the largest in the country. Summers also include Columbus’ own Arts Festival, as well as the separate Jazz and Ribs Festival. Leading up to this is May’s Rock on the Range Festival, a huge rock festival lasting three days.
- For those who long to participate in local zaniness, there the July Doo Dah Parade. Begun in 1932, and usually held on the 4th, this is an opportunity for entrants to indulge in the absurd regarding politics and other topics. One of the favorite, long-running entrants is the Marching Fidels.
- Sports fans can root for the Columbus Blue Jackets (Ohio’s only NHL franchise team, or the much-praised Ohio State Buckeyes sponsored by The Ohio State University. (And yes, “The” is part of the school’s name.)
- Weather: According to usclimatedata.com, summers heat up to an average max of 86 degrees F in July and a low of about 20 degrees in January. Precipitation falls about 133 days a year. Winters can get snowy.
Other considerations for Columbus
- The crime rate – especially crime involving personal violence and property damage or theft – are substantially higher here than the national average. Though some attempt to portray Ohio as LGBTQ-friendly, the number of hate crimes, especially in Columbus, while never low, have only escalated since late 2015.
- Property taxes are higher here than in much of Ohio.
- Winters can be depressing. Throw in the possibility of blizzards, severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, and general winter storms (any of which can disrupt electricity) and it’s clearly not necessarily the ideal retirement destination for some.
- Despite everything, it’s important to have access to a car of your own or to make your home in a facility that provides transportation.
