Denver, Colorado's capital and largest city, continues to be an increasingly popular retirement destination. The fact that there is already a sizable senior population there could make it yet more appealing, with city planners eager to accommodate retirees.

This city is known for its diversity. For instance, it has one of the largest Mexican-American populations in the country, resulting not only in a marked influence on architecture and cuisine but also in the number of Latin-flavored annual events. Denver also has a reputation for providing a comfortable home for the LGBTQ community.

No matter what level of care or assistance you desire, the options are many, varied, and tend to be affordable. If the costs of living in Denver seem a bit high to you, it’s worth it to look at the attractive surrounding suburbs or nearby towns.

Things people like about Denver

  • Simply breathtaking scenery, every day. Not to mention about 300 days of sun annually.
  • The cost of retirement in Denver is approximately 12% above the national average.
  • Taxwise, those 55 to 64 are entitled to a tax exclusion on pensions and annuities of $20,000 of their income from any source, and those 65+ can exclude $24,000. Property owners 65+ would also be entitled to a homestead exemption.
  • The “Mile High City” (exactly one mile above sea level, in fact) offers pleasant temperatures all-year-round. The average daily high in August is a comfortable, dry 86 degrees, cooling down nicely at night. Winters can be cold – nothing like Chicago, e.g. – but snow is likely for part of the winter, though the road maintenance crews are always prepared.
  • Per for 2019, Colorado ranks 8th out of the 50 states for the quality of its health care.
  • Many here have their own cars, the easier to get around this spread out town. However, there are 85 miles of well-maintained bike paths as well as an above-ground rail system and a network of ever-expanding bus routes.
  • As for the town’s walkability, rates Denver “somewhat walkable.” As for the downtown area, “some errands can be accomplished on foot,” while each neighborhood is rated individually.
  • Denver International Airport, Amtrak, and Greyhound Bus Lines will get you and your guests in and out of town with ease.
  • Especially for those who are still active, Denver offers a wealth of options from a trove of dining choices and wineries to biking, skiing, fishing, snowshoeing, and swimming, all year ‘round.
  • Besides the array of public gardens, there are over 200 parks including the 314-acre City Park. Red Rocks Park, with its unique amphitheater, hosts impressive musical events.
  • Opera, theater, live music, festivals and celebrations of all kinds (including Chinese New Year) occur throughout the year.
  • Pro sports are ably represented by the Denver Broncos, of course, but also by pro baseball, basketball, ice hockey, and soccer teams.

Other considerations for Denver

  • Though exact figures vary, Denver’s crime rate – for both violent crime and property-related crimes – is higher than the national average. According to as of July 11, 2017, the crime rate is rising. Neighborhoods vary, of course, so research a specific area to find out how safe it may be.
  • The higher altitude brings up some concerns. One, always have sunscreen at hand. Two, drink plenty of water. And three, even those without breathing issues may find it takes time to acclimate to the thinner air. Perhaps consult your physician before making the move.
  • If the city’s population is going to continue to grow, be prepared for housing costs, and the cost of living in general, to rise.
