Best Assisted Living in Montana

If you’re looking for an interesting alternative to the usual senior housing destinations, put Montana in the hopper. This suggestion will likely be most appealing either to those who already know “The Big Sky Country” or those retirees who crave the excitement of outdoor life complete with fishing, skiing, boating, whitewater rafting, and hiking, among other activities.

For that matter, the remarkable beauty of the lakes, streams, and rivers, the utter magnificence of their state parks and mountain ranges, plus opportunities to view herds of elk and other wildlife, will be a source of great joy to any nature lover. This state, like Wyoming, strives to preserve a measure of that Old West flavor that has so long characterized it.

Because of the spread-out nature of assisted living communities plus the limited number that have been rated online in Montana, we will be looking at the overall state versus a particular city. For Montana, we found eight properties in five cities: Billings, Bozeman, Great Falls, Kalispell, and Missoula.

What people like about Montana

  • Cost of living is just below the national average.
  • Montana is a popular tourist destination. Among the most popular attractions are Glacier National Park, Yellowstone National Park, and Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument.
  • This state lives up to its name, which is Spanish for “mountain.” There are 3,510 mountain peaks in the state, offering nearly countless opportunities for hiking, skiing, and nature appreciation. Besides the Montana Rockies and the Bitterroot Mountains (the two longest chains), there are scores of mountain islands and separate mountains to scale.
  • Though the tax situation is not great, there is no inheritance or estate tax. If the exemption is requested, property taxes are reduced by 34%. Others, because of low income or veteran status, may be eligible for a further exemption.
  • According to WalletHub.com, veterans can expect exceptionally good treatment in Montana. (Among US states, only Wyoming is even more veteran-friendly.) Besides financial benefits, Montana has the best vet health program in the country.
  • The Billings Clinic hospital network (the central site in Billings plus twelve branches outside Billings) is a highly regarded hospital system that also engages in outreach services to people living in facilities or in-home.
  • The fourth-largest US state, Montana’s longitude and latitude, combined with a wide range of variations in elevation, result in an unusual array of climates. E.g., those living here can expect cold waves on an average of six to 12 per winter, but the worst of these events will stay northeast of Glacier Park, although, occasionally a cold wave will sweep the entire state. For the record, even these cold spells are frequently broken up by several days of milder weather. The point is, do your research on any area you consider living in; what should you expect, weather-wise, throughout the year?
  • Even in the biggest cities, traffic tends to be quite manageable.
  • Mass transit is limited though it does exist within certain cities and might meet your and your visitors’ needs. The Greyhound Lines operates between towns, while Amtrak has built 12 stations in the state. As for intercity transit, Missoula, Billings, and Great Falls each has a reasonably extensive and frequent bus schedule.

Other considerations for Montana

  • Certain exemptions aside, federal, state and local pensions are taxed. So are Social Security benefits. Again, though, there may be a break for those whose income falls below a certain level.
  • Depending on your idea of “comfortable”, those winters can get cold and, at lower elevations, the summers may be too warm. Again, when looking at a particular facility or other community, ask questions of the locals and do online research to determine what factors will affect your particular climate.
  • Folks who come looking for a nature-and-space-filled paradise on earth should, again, talk to locals and do their research. Don’t let wishes or expectations blind you to reality.
  • Even Bozeman, a university town, may seem lacking in cultural and racial diversity. If you enjoy having entertainment, shopping, and dining options close to hand, Montana’s cities could disappoint. (The closest big city is Spokane, and that’s 200 miles to the west of Montana.)
