For those who have lived in New York and who decide to stay in the city through their later years, there are a variety of options for Assisted Living, from extravagant to homey. New York boasts some of the best hospitals in the US, and three of the top ten hospitals in the country for geriatrics (Mount Sinai Medical Center, Hospital for Special Surgery, and NYU Langone Medical Center) are located in New York.
What you might like about New York City:
Considering that we’re talking about New York City, there may not be a need to go into detail about its appeal. Still, just as a reminder, here are a few more things people like about the Big Apple:
- Entertainment options abound, regardless of your taste.
- Baseball fans: the NY Yankees and the Mets. Enough said.
- What you may not know is that the state of New York has a property-tax break known as the Senior Citizens’ Exemption. This benefit program may, depending on your situation, reduce your property taxes by 50% if you’re 65 or older and earn $29,000 or less.
- Social Security is not taxed. Overall, the state of New York treats retirees gently when it comes to taxes, though there is an estate tax.
- Those who enjoy outdoor life can choose from the beaches (why not try Fire Island, for example?), any number of lakes, a trip to the mountains, or go golfing on one of the dozen or so 18-hole public courses. They may not be Pebble Beach, but they are definitely playable.
- Sightseeing opportunities – whether for residents or their guests – are, of course, myriad. Architecture, museums, the Statue of Liberty – well, go wild.
- There’s no problem getting around thanks to the far-reaching subway system, aerial tram, extensive bus network, and easily flagged taxis. Additionally, both the John F. Kennedy and Newark Airports are accessible via their own rail-transit systems.
- For a major city, the crime rate is surprisingly low, and has been decreasing since the ‘90s. In 2015 the Economist rated NYC as the “10th overall-safest-city” out of 50 comparably-sized towns, and 28th wtih regards to personal safety.
Other considerations for New York City:
- Well, if you don’t care for big city life ….
- Summers are hot, and winters cold, with possible snow.
- It’s an expensive place to live. According to Kiplinger[dot]com, the 2018 figures indicate the cost of living in Manhattan is 138% higher than the national average. Brooklyn, NY? Lower, but still 82% above the national average.
