Best Assisted Living in Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City, the capital of Oklahoma and commonly referred to as OKC, may or may not be your idea of an appealing retirement destination. Let’s just say, it is rather a mixed bag.

On one hand, it offers quite a tax-friendly environment, relatively low cost of living, and ample entertainment opportunities. On the other, there’s the weather, a serious doctor shortage, and a dearth of public transportation.

To get more specific, we’ll look at things people say they like about this town, followed by what they don’t.

What people like about Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

  • The people who live there. At least one of OKC’s nicknames is, after all, “The Big Friendly.”
  • Beginning a little over 20 years ago, the citizens of OKC voted in the first of a series of massive Metropolitan Area Projects (MAPS). These MAPS funnel funds to either refurbish or construct from scratch libraries, schools, sports arenas, entertainment venues, and more.
  • Cost of living is approximately 11% lower than the national average.
  • State and local taxes 1% lower than the national average. Does not tax Social Security. There is no estate or inheritance tax, and property taxes are among the lowest in the country. There’s also a $10,000 deduction for income such as a 401(k) or a pension.
  • Nursing homes and Assisted Living tend to cost less in Oklahoma; more bang for your buck.
  • Music, theater, galleries, shopping, and dining – whether fine or casual – all close to hand.
  • OKC is home to 29 museums, ranging from the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, home to one of the largest collections of world-renowned Dale Chihuly glass in the world to the only “bone museum” in the US to museums dedicated to cowboys, science, military history, pigeons, softball, and more. The Oklahoma History Center is the go-to spot for information on OK history in general and Native American history in particular.
  • The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden cover 119 acres, housing1,900+ animals, rides, a walk-in bird exhibit, Butterfly Forest, Safari Voyage boats and much, much more.
  • There are four distinct seasons.
  • Professional sports teams: Oklahoma City Thunder (NBA), Oklahoma City Blue (a minor league affiliate of Thunder), Oklahoma City Dodgers (minor league baseball), Oklahoma City Energy FC (professional men’s soccer team).
  • Flying in and out of OKC is easy. Will Rogers World Airport and the Wiley Post Airport are OKC’s chief airfields, the first about six miles southwest of the downtown area, with the latter some seven miles to the northwest.

Other considerations for Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

  • Doctor shortage: On 10/6/2016, a local OKC TV station reported the shortage was “severe,” and that Oklahoma ranked 48th with only two other states in worse shape. Whether it’s too few doctors or an inefficiently run national healthcare system (as some argue), getting a suitable doctor or specialist, and getting a timely appointment, can be difficult. Depending on the agreement your facility has with local doctors or hospitals, this may not be an issue.
  • Sales tax: Although Oklahoma taxes are relatively low overall, the state has the sixth highest state and local sales taxes in the country.
  • High crime rate: As of 2012, the crime rate in OKC was 22% higher than the national average.
  • The weather: OKC sits in the I-44 (that is Interstate-44) Tornado Corridor, one of the most active tornado regions in the world. Spring is especially prone to tornado activity. On May 3, 1999, no less than 70 tornadoes were reported over this region. Dangerous to both life and property.
  • Mass transit: Pretty much nonexistent. Retirees are better off if they either have their own car or have access to a facility-owned shuttle, bus or van.
