Best Assisted Living in Pittsburgh

Situated in the southwest corner of the state, the strikingly attractive city of Pittsburgh is embraced by the convergence of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers which flow together to form the impressive Ohio River. One of the most literate and highly cultured of cities, “The Burgh” (one of Pittsburgh’s nicknames) has a lot to offer anyone who would enjoy a stimulating atmosphere.

Following the collapse of its steel industry in the 1980s, Pittsburgh chose to reinvent itself. Frequently cited as one of the most desirable places to live in the US, in 2015 it was included in a list of the eleven most livable cities in the world. Their Assisted Living options have been expanding rapidly of late, resulting in varied and appealing facilities. For those who prefer a lower-key, less urban lifestyle, there are numerous suburbs and nearby towns worth exploring.

Whether you follow professional sports, savor cultural events (theater, music, art, dance) or want to pursue further education, Pittsburgh can meet your needs and for less money than many other places in the country. Perhaps a further sign of what makes this town special is that it is the home of the tv show Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, a show that has influenced so many viewers and that Pittsburghers continue to commemorate.

While Pittsburgh is rapidly developing facilities to accommodate retirees, only so many have been rated yet, so – as is often the case – the Senior List is taking advantage of the fact that there are well-rated facilities within just a few miles of “The City of Bridges” (Pittsburgh contains 446 bridges). Even so, one would still be close enough to have easy access to all that makes Pittsburgh so attractive.

What people like about Pittsburgh:

  • Because the urban population is only about 300,000, Pittsburgh could be the ideal place for those who want big city amenities with small town charm.
  • Those who require four distinct seasons annually will be pleased. The annual low, in January, is 21 degrees F while the summer high in July is about 84 degrees.
  • There is some humidity, but not nearly as bad as, say, Washington, DC.
  • This is an unusually safe area when it comes to natural events like hurricanes (extremely rare). Thunderstorms do occur, but the only real threat would be from flooding, which naturally occurs in the areas bordering the rivers.
  • Income from military benefits, as well as most of the standard retirement benefits earned by those old enough to retire. are not taxed. Other forms of income, e.g. 401k plans, could be taxed. Social Security is not taxed. The sales tax is 6%.
  • The collective crime rate for the city (which does vary by neighborhood) is somewhat higher than the national average, both for crimes against persons as well as property-related crime. Reportedly, the last two years have seen a decrease in both.
  • This is one ethnically diverse town as evidenced by neighborhoods that are chiefly African American, Latino, Polish, German, Lithuanian, Jewish, Irish, among many other nationalities.
  • Whether you crave an exciting urban buzz or a more laid-back atmosphere, there’s a neighborhood to suit you.
  • The downtown area is relatively small, very walkable, and packed with shops, restaurants, galleries, historic sites, museums, libraries and all manner of entertainment opportunities.
  • To get in and out of town, there’s the Pittsburgh International Airport, Greyhound, and Amtrak.
  • Pittsburgh has five city parks as well as several overseen by the Nature Conservancy, including the 664-acre Frick Park.
  • This one of the safest cities in the US when it comes to natural disasters. The only significant threat is for those living in low-lying areas near a river, where they could be subject to flooding.
  • There are five Pittsburgh-based pro teams covering baseball, football, hockey, soccer, and basketball.
  • If you enjoy craft beers, you’ll love The Burgh.
  • Healthcare is world-class, thanks to the innovative University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the Allegheny Health Network.
  • The University of Pittsburgh is worth a visit whether or not one goes as a student. The simply magnificent and utterly unique Cathedral of Learning, the centerpiece of the handsome campus, is a must-see: this 42-story, Gothic-style structure contains 2,000 rooms including classrooms, administration offices, 27 “Nationality Rooms,” art galleries, and a wealth of rooms devoted to other purposes. They also have a food court and lounge area to help visitors sustain themselves.

Other considerations for Pittsburgh:

  • Though the city has a public transportation network (bus system, subway, light rail vehicles, and two inclines/cable cars), many consider it less than adequate. If you don’t have your own car or your facility does not provide enough transportation, there are several businesses and organizations devoted to filling this gap for seniors and the disabled.
  • Winters, though not especially cold, can get – and remain – snowy, which could be at the least unpleasant.
  • Snow, combined with something of a maze of streets and bridges, can create a dangerous driving situation. Local drivers also have a bad reputation.
  • Air and water quality fall below the national average. It could be wise to confer with your physician before making this move.

What they didn’t like: when I want something changed or have questions about medication I never get a call back, evening staff….are horribly understaffed and undertrained, seem to be understaffed and disorganized, units didn’t have their own laundry facilities, nothing in the kitchen other than a very small refrigerator and microwave, no pool, very little storage space [in apts.], too fancy for my [loved one], problem with that pharmacy bill which…has been plaguing us for five months, menu seems to be very non eclectic, Not enough caregivers, Old style technology, too expensive, recommend this place if you have long term insurance, They pressured me, not all inclusive fee…makes it difficult to predict final monthly cost, $3000 one time application fee, do not have services for other faiths on site [other than Christian], [do not accept] credit card payments, very upscale and elaborate…overwhelming

What they liked: beautiful facility, so gorgeous, clean, modern, relatively new, more “residential” feel than “nursing home” style, quiet, extremely clean and extremely well-maintained, very organized place, very bright place, very cheerful, charming and cozy, the sense of community, know [loved one] is safe and in good hands, a house dog that interacts with residents, resident cat on alzheimers floor, very nicely appointed in the public areas, the layout, Everyone looked pretty well cared for, nearby woods, deer, a gazebo, lots of outdoor chairs, a pretty wrap around porch, seemed like it was a five-star hotel, excellent care, staff is…professional and generally good, very professional staff, [Staff] has really gone above and beyond, staff seemed to know everyone by name, they really seemed interested in everyone individually, Even as a visitor I felt like it was home for someone, Sunrise of McCandless was more active than the others I visited, seemed like a very engaged and active community, always…a lot going on, seemed like they get personal one-on-one care, They have the same caregivers every day so they are familiar with the patients, They paired the residents with partners when they…first come in to help them get acclimated, spoke with some of the residents and their families and they were really happy, people were outside socializing, Their personnel is what I will recommend above all, [staff] have made [loved one] feel at home during this difficult time in her life, staff…are so kind [&] giving and respectful, staff seemed to be very positive, staff has been very good in the move-in phase and the follow through, consistent and accurate feedback, staff and residents are very friendly, Security is fine, special floor for “pre-dementia” patients, a separate floor for dementia and memory care, they have a person at the front desk at all times, a nurse on staff, If someone is having a bad day or does not feel like being in a group that is OK but they are not ignored and left [entirely alone], the flexibility of day-to-day care, [Facility is] a block away from a hospital specializing in geriatric care, staff is friendly and helpful, they were very caring, dining room facilities were restaurant like [&] with choices, food is quite good, [Food] is delicious, meals are fine, food is fantastic, chef has a private garden in the community, On the Alzheimer's floor [there’s] a really nice balcony so people can still go outside and sit but can't wander off, apartments are absolutely beautiful, The private rooms were plain but doable, rooms are efficient, rooms were gorgeous and very spacious, memory care…on the third floor…has a special room for people who had [sun] down problems with all those lights on the ceiling, studio apartments and shared suites are clean and of a decent size, a studio with a little kitchenette and a bathroom, various room options available, very pleased with the [private] rooms, [Loved one’s] room is always clean, the shared rooms…each had their own bedroom and there was a door [&] They also had little kitchenettes, a shared suite…has a shared bathroom, everyone has their own privacy, a lot of activities, movie nights, field trips, book clubs, movie nights, they play games, activities on the water, karaoke, regular exercise program, a facility wide [family included] luau party, They had entertainers, a big barbeque, bowling, play with balloons, bingo, they have entertainment come in weekly, had a buffet of popcorn [&] coffee [&] doughnuts

What they didn’t like: Many of the caregivers are very good and attentive but VERY much overworked and understaffed, newer and younger caregivers are not as trained and attentive to the residents needs, missed medications, waiting long periods of time when the call alarm pulled, Huge turnover of employees, It seemed a little high class, some of the staff was neglectful

What they didn’t like: the attendants who give showers and assist the residents were really poor, they had a lot of patients, just enough room for a bed and a dresser, woefully understaffed especially at night and weekends, Food was awful, didn't have nurses on hand, abuse and lack of staff to patient ratio, they do seem to be understaffed as far as the nurse assistants, OK facility but very run down and dirty looking, the bedrooms were so little
