Best Assisted Living in Tucson

Located in the dry, arid Sonoran Desert, Tucson, the second largest city in Arizona, is a mere 60 miles from Mexico and 120 miles from Phoenix. Sitting at about 2,400 feet and surrounded by five minor mountain ranges and the Coronado National Forest to the northeast, the views are spectacular.

Having long been a popular retreat for senior citizens, the colorful and well-preserved town and its suburbs abound with all types of desirable senior housing as well as a wealth of entertainment opportunities.

“The Old Pueblo,” the city’s favored nickname, loves to celebrate life. There are myriad festivals and concerts, as well as a delectable selection of restaurants and intriguing shopping, cultural and educational options, just waiting for you.

What people like about Tucson, Arizona

  • The cost of living is generally about 6% below the national average.
  • As of 2018, Social Security is not taxed; there is no death or inheritance tax; public and private pensions are partially taxed, and withdrawals from retirement accounts are fully taxed.
  • About half the size of Phoenix, Tucson is easy to get to know and has more of a “small town” feel with all the amenities and a more liberal tone.
  • A relaxed, sunny, laid back lifestyle with access to plenty of activities, both in- and outdoors.
  • Very pleasant winters. The lowest temperature on average is 42 degrees F, rarely dipping below 32 degrees F. At its hottest, expect 101 degrees F or higher. Remember that Tucson’s elevation (2,400 feet) does help keep temps down, the heat is dry versus humid and sticky, and everyone has air-conditioning.
  • Vibrant, colorful surroundings, both natural and manmade. There’s a strong artist community in Tucson and it’s made its mark architecturally.
  • Tucson’s highly individual and exciting art scene is an amalgam of many influences, though Mexican and Native American are particularly strong.
  • Year-round golfing, biking, hiking and just about any other sport you can think of.
  • Tucson has an impressive array of hospitals and clinics.
  • To get around town, use the award-winning Sun Tran bus system. There’s a streetcar system for the university and downtown area. For those wanting in or out of town, there’s Amtrak, Greyhound, and Tucson International Airport.
  • Enjoy rooting for local pro sports teams? Choose from NASCAR events at Tucson Raceway Park, the brand-new (as of 2019) FC Tucson men’s soccer team, or Tucson-based pro baseball and hockey teams.
  • Southern California, Mexico, and Phoenix are all close enough to visit whenever you like.

Other considerations for Tucson

  • As stated above, summers can get hot.
  • The crime rates, for both violent and property-related crimes, is about 77%, on average, per, for Arizona as a whole. According to the same site, the percentage rises to approximately 121% higher than the national average. The moral: select your neighborhood carefully.
