Best Assisted Living in Waco

Waco, TX, also known as “the heart of Texas,” is a city determined to make itself as welcoming as possible. One way of doing that is by developing the senior housing options as well as big city amenities. With a population of just under 135,000, this city now combines the charms of a small town with that of a rising urban center.

The relatively low cost of living, sunny climate, bike-friendliness, plus the cultural and entertainment options Waco offers, have made it increasingly popular for people of all ages, including seniors. Residents of this city and their guests will never run out of fun things to do or beautiful scenery to revel in.

For those who want a less urban experience, there are lovely facilities available in neighboring towns. Temple, Woodway, and Hewitt, just to name three of the suburbs, are appealing each in its own way, and all are eager to prove they can meet their residents’ needs and desires.

Things people like about Waco:

  • The cost of living is about 20% less than the national average.
  • Housing prices are also significantly less than you’ll find in most of the US.
  • It’s a good situation taxwise. Retirees pay no personal income tax, and retirement benefits are untaxed.
  • Educational and entertainment opportunities exist thanks to the presence of Baylor University, Texas State Technical College, and McLennan County Community College.
  • Take advantage of all the sun (about 230 days annually) to indulge in outdoor sports. Waco has one of the ten best golf courses in Texas, and extensive biking and hiking trails await you. With the smaller population and light traffic congestion, this is an easy town to get around in.
  • Live music and a variety of festivals keep the town lively throughout the year.
  • Waco’s location makes it easy to hop over to Austin or Dallas. There are three airports nearby as well as an Amtrak station.
  • Waco sits on the grand Brazos River, and borders beautiful Waco Lake, both providing easy access to fishing, swimming, and other water activities. There are also many parks and other green spaces. Check out Cameron Park, all 416 acres of it, right in downtown Waco.
  • Among fun sites to visit are the Dr. Pepper Museum, the Waco Mammoth site (view the fossilized remains of 24 mammoths), and the Texas Ranger Museum.
  • For a rare shopping experience, visit the Magnolia Market run by Chip and Joanna Gaines, hosts of the HGTV show Fixer Upper. Antiques, other specialty items, various events, and food trucks make this a place you’ll visit again and again. And don’t ignore their ever-expanding Farmer’s Market.
  • Among the numerous museums is the Mayborn Museum Complex with its emphasis on natural history. This museum, with its walk-in dioramas, allows visitors to explore the past.
  • Inter-city public transportation includes a bus system that serves most of the town Monday through Saturday, the Baylor Shuttle Bus (BUS), and a Demand Response Van for those with special transportation needs.
  • The Cameron Park Zoo, the famed Waco Suspension Bridge, and Baylor Campus are just three of the sites you’ll see, walking the seven-mile scenic trail that follows the Brazos River.

Other considerations for Waco:

  • While figures vary depending on the source, it is agreed that both violent and property crimes are significantly more likely in Waco than in the majority of the US. The rates do vary by neighborhood.
  • Summers can get long, hot, and sticky. Tornadoes are a possibility in spring.
  • Although the northern part of town is relatively diverse, Waco is not yet nearly equivalent to, say, Austin, TX.
  • Air quality is slightly below the US average. You might want to confer with your doctor before making this move.
  • For all that Waco is working to overcome it, there is no denying the city’s deeply troubled past. And, despite the town’s progressiveness, it may yet be too conservative for some folks.
