5 Places to Find Senior Discounts During the Holiday Season

Budgets are tight enough for older adults without holiday-related expenses thrown into the mix. Luckily, there are plenty of senior discounts out there — if you know where to look, that is. Read on for a roundup of five places to find seniors deals and discounts this holiday season.

1. Grocery Stores

Whether you're hosting for the holidays or simply tightening up on your purse strings to save up for more gifts this year, grocery stores are a great place to start.

Taking advantage of supermarket savings does involve some planning ahead, however. While many stores offer weekly deals, others offer discounts — up to 10 percent on your total bill — only one day out of the month. Check in with your local grocery store to find out more about designated senior discount days.

2. Restaurants

You'll need some sustenance to get you through those holiday shopping excursions. Restaurants like Applebees, Boston Market, Carrabba's Italian Grill, Bennigan's, Bob's Big Boy, the Chart House, Chili's, Dunkin Donuts, Friendly's, Outback Steakhouse, Subway, and many others all offer deals for seniors, ranging from 10% off of your meal to a free drink with your purchase.

Again, the details depend on the day and the restaurant so be sure to inquire in advance if you plan on taking advantage of the deals. Also, keep in mind that some do require an AARP or other membership to cash in, so make sure you've got your card with you.

3. Retail & Apparel Stores

Heading to the mall to pick the perfect present for your granddaughter or to stock up on holiday cards? Retailers ranging from Banana Republic to Hallmark offer discounts for seniors — usually at least one day of the week.

Department stores like Kohl's, Marshall's, Belk, TJ Maxx and Ross Stores also offer day-specific senior shopping discounts. For example, head to Kohl's on Wednesdays for 15% off your purchase and Ross on Tuesday for 10%.

Again, check in with your local store to confirm the offer before braving the holiday crowds.

4. Travel

Thinking of gifting yourself with a trip after the hustle and the bustle of the holidays are over? From transportation including air travel, cruises and car rentals to accommodations and even National Parks admissions, travel-related discounts for seniors are abundant.

Again, these vary from company to company and even from franchise to franchise to franchise. The takeaway? Finding the best travel deals may take some legwork, but it's well worth the effort in the form of discounts!

5. Pharmacy

Keeping other personal costs low at this time of year is also important, which is why discounts on prescriptions can be so valuable — especially for seniors who may be managing multiple expensive medications. AARP's prescription discount program not only offers free exclusive discounts to AARP members and their spouses, but also to their dependents, including children, grandchildren, and stepchildren.

Additionally, many pharmacies, such as Rite Aid, CVS, Costco, Walgreen's and Narcup also offer their own prescription discount programs. Taking advantage of these programs can add up to significant savings. And besides — can you think of any better present than the gift of good health?

One last thing to keep in mind? Even if you're not 65 yet, you may still be able to cash in on senior discounts. Many programs start as early as age 50 so be sure to inquire about eligibility.
