Organic Burial Pods

Presenting a brilliant new idea to consider when you leave this earth! Instead of a typical burial or cremation service, an innovative Italian company called Capsula Mundi is turning your body (or your ashes) into trees! How lovely would it be to see a quaking aspen or a majestic maple in place of a traditional tombstone? Or for the traditionalists out there… How about along side your tombstone?

About Capsula Mundi

Capsula Mundi is turning the traditional burial methodology “on it's head”… Here's what they have to say about their organic burial pods:

Capsula Mundi is a cultural and broad-based project, which envisions a different approach to the way we think about death. It's an egg-shaped pod, an ancient and perfect form, made of biodegradable material, where our departed loved ones are placed for burial. Ashes will be held in small Capsulas while bodies will be laid down in a fetal position in larger pods. The pod will then be buried as a seed in the earth. A tree, chosen in life by the deceased, will be planted on top of it and serve as a memorial for the departed and as a legacy for posterity and the future of our planet. – Capsula Mundi

Here's a deeper dive into what Capsula Mundi's burial options mean to you and your loved ones…

Any thoughts on this new burial concept?  We think it's a very interesting consideration, and love the idea of a memorial that is both beautiful and alive… Let us know what you think in the comments below.

  1. Sounds like a great green option to me but is a person allowed in any Canadian cemetary, our own land or special place? What kind of permission do you need for these burial choices I’ve listed?

  2. are these options available in the United States? and if so are they state specific and what are the costs? I’m in mid 60’s and want to know what is available and be prepared in advance. I’m donating my body to science but what they don’t need they will cremate and send to a relative. Might as well plan now since the inevitable is we are all going to die.
