One of our founders recently found himself in Homer Alaska on a work trip (lucky guy). While visiting Homer Alaska, he took some marvelous photos and we wanted to share those with you.

Visiting Homer Alaska

Homer Alaska is located on the Kenai Peninsula, 225 miles SW of Anchorage. Most people drive down from Anchorage, but you can catch a 40 minute flight to Homer as well. Other travel options into Homer include regularly scheduled shuttle services (out of Anchorage) and a limited ferry service.

There's one road into Homer, and that same road is the only way out…

There's lots to do when visiting Homer Alaska. One of the main things tourists come down for is the fishing. Homer is famous for it's Halibut fishing. In fact around Homer, halibut is the most popular dish you'll find on a restaurant menu.

Fish and Chips Anyone?

You can get your halibut any way you like, but the most requested preparation is by way of fish and chips. You'll see restaurants offering this local fare up and down the board walk.

There are many outdoor activities to choose from, but the fishing is epic. “The guys” scheduled their Homer fishing trip with Bob's Trophy Charters. Bob's can take care of all of your needs directly (with one of their own boats) or schedule you on another (charter) boat if they are booked-up.

Last year the fellas caught their limit of Halibut, but this year they missed “limiting” by one. I guess they'll need to go back to practice up! 🙂

The Boardwalk (seen below) is a great place to walk around and take in the sites and sounds of Homer. The Boardwalk straddles each side of the road into (and out of) Homer. You'll find restaurants, gift shops, bars, bike rentals, and activity charters all over the place.

Bike Rentals and other Adventures in Homer Alaska

If you're up for action and adventure, you can schedule your activities in one of the many adventure shops located on the boardwalk. Whether you want to rent a mountain bike, go whale watching, take pictures of bears, or just take a boat ride, these shops can take care of you.

One of the coolest bike shops around Homer is Cycle Logical (great name). 🙂 Yes you can rent bikes there, but they will even organize a fat-bike-beach-tour if you want them too. That tour looks like an awesome experience – Might have to book that adventure for next year!

RV Parking in Homer Alaska

Homer is a small community and overnight accommodations are limited.  During Homer's high-season (summer time) it can be tough to find a room on short notice. It's always better to plan ahead for this trip.  There are plenty of places to park your RV though! This is a great way to see Homer if you're lucky enough to have the time (and the RV) to stay a while.

Local Joint: The Salty Dawg Saloon in Homer Alaska

At the end of your day, if you're looking for a true “locals” bar, the Salty Dawg Saloon is the place to be. This isn't necessarily a nice place, or a clean place… But let's face it, that's not what Homer is all about. Homer is about authenticity, and the Salty Dawg is as authentic a place as you'll find anywhere.
