What Original Medicare Covers for COVID Testing
Medicare covers up to eight over-the-counter COVID-19 tests for free each month. This coverage is offered under Medicare Part B. If you have Part A only, then you’ll have to see what other programs or insurance coverage you may have that covers free testing.
Under Part B, Medicare covers COVID-19 diagnostic tests. If you don’t have Medicare Part B, then you can obtain a free test through community-based testing sites or participating pharmacies. Keep in mind, however, that some places may require you to show your Medicare card to receive free tests.
Regardless, once the public health emergency ends, coverage for COVID-19 testing will end.
Can I Get Reimbursed for COVID-19 Tests?
If you have Original Medicare, Part B, or Medicare Advantage, starting April 4, 2022, you can receive up to eight COVID-19 tests each month at no cost until the public health emergency ends. You will not receive reimbursement from Medicare if you purchased an over-the-counter COVID-19 test before April 4, 2022.
