Like many other prescription discount services, WellRx offers a free discount card to find the lowest prices on thousands of prescriptions at over 65,000 pharmacies. To use these discounts, all you have to do is search for a medication and select a pharmacy. Then you can either print, text, or download the coupon to show it to the pharmacist.
WellRx is completely free to use. With no enrollment fee or limits on usage, one of the benefits of the discount card is that anyone in your household can use the same card at over 65,000 participating pharmacies nationwide. This saves you the hassle of creating an account for each family member.
I’d recommend getting the lowest prices by first downloading the free WellRx mobile app on your smartphone or creating an account on their website. From there, you can search for medications at pharmacies near you. The last step is to show your savings card at the pharmacy.
The chart below shows the retail prices of Lorcet and hydrocodone (the generic equivalent), and the cost when using WellRx.
Pharmacy | Lorcet retail price | Hydrocodone retail price | Cost with WellRx |
---|---|---|---|
CVS Pharmacy | $40.50 | $24.69 | $7.88 |
Walgreens | $40.18 | $24.69 | $7.99 |
Albertsons Pharmacy | $96.34 | $24.69 | $8.96 |
It was easy to use WellRx to browse discounted prescriptions at nearby pharmacies and manage medications. When I downloaded the free app to my iPhone, I could access tutorials on how to use WellRx’s features.
Searching for medications was quite easy. All I had to do was go to the home screen and click on the magnifying glass icon. I searched for Lipitor, which helps lower cholesterol. The generic version of this is called atorvastatin calcium. From there, I was able to set my location to find local pharmacies that carried the drug. I was pleased to find that I was able to click on pricing, set price alerts, and get detailed medicine information along with images and a video explaining the drug in detail.
What’s more, the search menu also had information about whether the drug interacts with other medications that you’re currently taking. It was helpful to note that Lipitor had a moderate interaction with the antacids that I added to my Medicine Chest. I thought this was a nifty tool that alerted me to possible interactions that I could discuss with my pharmacist.
The WellRx mobile app lets you compare and identify the lowest prices possible through a simple pharmacy location search. You can see if nearby pharmacies carry the prescription drug you’re looking for. For example, I searched for benzonatate, the generic equivalent of Tessalon Perle, for my lingering cough. I was able to see an image of the capsule, as well as quantity details of the capsules. Below this, I was given a list of nearby pharmacies. The cheapest member price was at $9.63 at a local pharmacy, followed by Walmart pharmacy at $18.03.
It was helpful to see all of the member prices I’d receive just by showing my WellRx discount card. When I clicked on the member price, I was pleased to note that the app pulled up directions to the pharmacy, the pharmacy’s phone number and hours of operation, and other details about the drug. I added this prescription to my Medicine Chest and set this pharmacy as my preferred pharmacy for automatic repricing.
Overall, I was impressed with being able to look up a pharmacy’s location, pricing, and hours. If I need to call a pharmacist, the app has a helpful call button that can dial the number for me.
WellRx has additional features that you can use on a daily basis.
Medicine Chest: One of the standout features that was super useful was the Medicine Chest, which lets you add medications that you’re browsing and view interactions. If I had more questions about particular medications, there was a helpful “Ask a Pharmacist” feature to get answers to my non-emergency questions about medications.
Grocery Guidance: I also enjoyed using the Grocery Guidance feature, which can only be used if you sign up for a free account. I used this feature when going to the grocery store to find healthy products that best matched my dietary restrictions and helped me make better choices.
WellRx can be used for those with limited or no prescription drug coverage, as well as individuals who have existing health insurance, Medicare, or a high-deductible health plan. You can use your free WellRx discount card to help reduce the cost of medications that are not covered by your insurance provider. In some cases, you may be able to get a lower price on a medication than you would with insurance. In other cases, insurance might be the better option.
Since Medicare is technically a form of insurance, you cannot use it in tandem with WellRx discounts. That said, you can always compare the different rates and use whichever method offers you the lower price.

While both WellRx and GoodRx offer discounts on prescription services, the two services differ in terms of drug prices, availability, and features. Generally, WellRx offers greater discounts; however, the costs vary by drug. Since both services are free, we’d recommend looking up your potential savings from each based on the medications you use regularly.
