Uber doesn’t currently have a discount for seniors; however, the company occasionally offers introductory discounts for new users. In the past, these discounts have included $10-$20 vouchers as well as free rides.
Uber Pass Discounts
While not exactly a discount, the Uber Pass program gives members discounts on rides and other services. An Uber Pass subscription costs $24.99 per month, and it includes the following benefits:
10% off all UberX, UberXL, and Uber Comfort Rides
15% off premium rides
$0 delivery fee on Uber Eats orders over $15
5% off Uber Eats orders over $15
$0 delivery fee on grocery deliveries over $30
If a person plans to use Uber services multiple times per week, then an Uber Pass subscription will likely make financial sense.
Alternatives to Uber
Since Uber doesn’t offer any discounts for seniors, you might consider the following transportation options:
Volunteer transportation programs: There are many volunteer transportation programs that provide free or low-cost transportation to seniors. These programs are often run by local organizations, such as senior centers or churches. You can contact your local Area Agency on Aging (AAA) to find out about volunteer transportation programs in your area.
Nonemergency medical transportation (NEMT): NEMT is a government-funded program that provides transportation to seniors who need to get to medical appointments. NEMT services are typically free or low-cost. You can contact your state's Department of Health to find out more about NEMT in your area.
Access-A-Ride: Access-A-Ride is a paratransit service that provides door-to-door transportation to seniors and people with disabilities. Access-A-Ride is available in many major cities across the U.S. You can contact your local Access-A-Ride office to find out more about this service.
GoGoGrandparent: GoGoGrandparent uses a combination of phone calls, text messages, and an online dashboard to connect seniors with rides from Uber and Lyft drivers. The primary benefit of this service is that you don’t need a smartphone to book a ride. Rather, you simply call the number and they arrange the service for you.
