Dateability provides a much-needed resource for disabled singles with a welcoming, inclusive philosophy and easy-to-use interface. Although not designed for seniors specifically, the app has no upper age limit for members, and because most people are prone to developing health problems or challenges as they age, Dateability can be a useful resource for single older adults looking for relationships.

Members can check off items from an extensive list of personal challenges they experience, including mobility issues, chronic conditions, mental health considerations, and sensory impairments. They can also indicate if they’re able-bodied or nondisabled, as everyone is welcome.

Dateability+, which offers extra features and more specific filtering options, costs $4.99 per month or $54.99 a year, and you’re free to cancel anytime. Dateability also allows messaging with its free version, which sets it apart from other dating apps and websites.

Some people who have written about their experiences with Dateability online have said how happy they were that Dateability made them feel seen and lovable rather than marginalized, compared with their experiences on other dating apps. Some users have pointed out that there are no options for filtering by language or pet ownership, however, which can be dealbreakers for many people. Others have found, as we did, that their local match options are scant. But it is a fairly new dating app, so this could change as more people learn about Dateability.

The biggest problem with Dateability is the lack of local matches. As a newer app focused on disability, it makes sense that membership numbers are much lower than more general dating apps that have been around for decades, such as eharmony or Christian Mingle.

But if you’re looking for a serious relationship, the smaller pool can be a major drawback. One of our reviewers lives in Florida and did not match with a single person in their state, or even in the Southern region of the U.S.! Although they had set their location preferences to be within 50 miles of where they live, many of the matches were across the country (Californians appear to be well-represented on Dateability) or even out of the country — they matched with several people in Canada, the UK, and Scotland. Dateability does offer an option to filter out faraway matches completely, but then you might miss out on chatting with someone you really click with in every way other than geographically.

A “browsing by disability” feature, like Special Bridge offers, might be helpful for members once Dateability’s membership base grows. It was also a little annoying that we couldn’t poke around the site and take a look until we’d filled in a good amount of information about what we were looking for, the nature of the disability, and had downloaded four photos.

Although Dateability’s membership base is small, its affordable monthly fees and safety features make it well worth trying out, in our opinion. We appreciate the thoughtful design and features, such as asking members to add descriptions for each of their photos so that people with problems with vision or sensory processing can get a sense of what’s in them. Even if it might not be a useful resource for finding romantic matches in your area, it can help you finetune what you’re looking for or how you choose to communicate your challenges to others or make like-minded new friends.
